NBA Rescinds Luka Dončić’s Second Technical Foul of the Season

The NBA rescinded the technical foul assessed to Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić late in the second quarter of Monday’s 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat, reducing his season total from two technicals to one, the NBA announced.

Dončić was initially whistled with 1:12 remaining in the second quarter after clapping in the direction of an official while disputing a no-call. The league announced the rescission Tuesday, meaning he will not have to pay the $2,000 fine.

The Lakers guard finished Monday’s game with 42 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and two steals on 14-of-24 shooting.

Season Technical Count Drops to One

Dončić had received his first technical of the season during an Oct. 30 game against the Golden State Warriors. With Monday’s call rescinded, the 27-year-old has just one technical to begin the 2026-27 season.

“This season, I’m trying to not get techs,” Dončić said on Oct. 21.

Sixteen Technicals Bring Automatic Suspension and Fine

A player receives an automatic one-game suspension and a $5,000 fine upon reaching 16 technical fouls in a regular season. Dončić has accumulated 16 technicals in four of his eight league seasons, including last season with the Lakers when he served a one-game suspension during L.A.’s 120-101 victory over the Washington Wizards on March 30.

Dončić’s Scoring Pace Trails Only Jordan and Chamberlain

Dončić tops the NBA with 38.3 points per game this season, and his career scoring average of 29.35 points per game ranks behind only Michael Jordan (30.12) and Wilt Chamberlain (30.07). He has scored at least 37 points in five consecutive games, topping 40 in four of those outings.

Luka holds the NBA record with 19 games featuring 40+ points, 10+ assists, and 5+ made 3-pointers! Over his last five games he has made 34 3-pointers while shooting 53.1% from the field.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose Heat lost to the Lakers, said Dončić is “one of the best scorers to play this game, if not the best,” and added when asked to clarify: “Not right now. Of all time.”

Lakers Teammates Credit Dončić for Opening the Floor

Dončić’s Lakers teammate Quentin Grimes said the Slovene is on a heater where “it just seems like everything he’s shooting is going to go in.” Los Angeles went 37 for 80 beyond the arc in the past two games while scoring 269 total points, and the Lakers racked up 39 assists against the Heat, the most they’ve had in a game since Redick took over in 2024.

The Lakers improved to 6-2 on the season and hold the No. 4 spot in the West standings.
