Rafa Camara Replaces Ocon at Haas for Brazilian Grand Prix

Camara debuts at Interlagos as Haas ends Ocon’s season early

Rafael Camara will make his official Formula 1 debut at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix, the Haas team confirmed, with the 21-year-old Brazilian driving the VF-26 alongside Oliver Bearman at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace from November 6 to 8, the twentieth round of the 2026 championship, Sky Sport reported. The announcement brings forward a move that was already scheduled: Camara had been signed as a Haas race driver for 2027, Gazzetta dello Sport reported.

The seat became available because Esteban Ocon will not drive for Haas again this season. The French driver was replaced by Ryo Hirakawa from Saturday onward at the Mexico City Grand Prix after a heated exchange with team principal Ayao Komatsu, and Haas has now made that separation permanent for the remainder of 2026.

Komatsu said the decision was taken in the team’s interest and declined to discuss the internal conversations: “We communicated to Esteban Ocon that he will not return to a race seat with Haas this season.”

The Mexico meeting that broke the relationship

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the rupture followed an animated argument during the Friday-evening meeting after free practice in Mexico, which led to Ocon being sent away early and Hirakawa taking his place. The split followed a confrontation between Ocon, Komatsu and other team members, and the relationship had already been strained by the announcement that Ocon’s contract would not be renewed for 2027 in favor of Camara.

Hirakawa scored a point on his debut in Mexico, but he is not an option for São Paulo because he is committed to the WEC round at Monza this weekend chasing the Toyota drivers’ title.

IS DEBUTING IN BRAZIL AN ADVANTAGE FOR RAFA CÂMARA?

What Camara brings — and what he has never done

Camara, a Ferrari Driver Academy member since 2021 and the current Formula 2 championship leader, has never raced at Interlagos and has never driven a car of the 2026 generation, Motorsport reported. His preparation comes from five TPC test outings this season — four in the Ferrari SF-25 and one in the Haas VF-25, the latter at Portimão in August, which Komatsu cited as the basis for the promotion: “After the excellent performance in the August TPC test, we know Rafa’s abilities and we can’t wait to welcome him to the team this weekend,” the team principal said, per Corriere della Sera.

The full race weekend replaces a limited program: instead of a single hour of track time, Camara must handle an entire Grand Prix weekend, and Motorsport reported that Friday’s FP1 session initially earmarked for him will instead go to Dino Beganovic.

Did you know? Camara’s Haas seat for 2027 and Bearman’s form an all-Ferrari Driver Academy lineup at the American team — an unprecedented pairing that now arrives a season early in São Paulo.

Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi still unresolved

Haas has confirmed Camara only for this weekend, Corriere della Sera noted, leaving the final three rounds — Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi — without a declared lineup. Automoto.it reported that Maranello would prefer to protect Camara for the decisive Formula 2 rounds in Lusail and Yas Marina, where the title is being decided, meaning the Haas seat could go elsewhere for the season finale.

Questions fans are asking about the Haas swap

Not yet. Haas has confirmed him only for the São Paulo Grand Prix alongside Bearman; the lineup for Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi remains undecided, according to Corriere della Sera and Automoto.it.

Why was Ocon dropped? Haas says only that the decision followed an internal dispute with Komatsu in Mexico and serves the team’s interest, keeping the details confidential. Gazzetta dello Sport reported the trigger was a heated Friday-evening argument after free practice in Mexico City.

Has Camara ever driven at Interlagos? No. Motorsport reported that despite being Brazilian, he has never lapped the circuit, and he has also never driven a 2026-specification car.

Automoto.it described the end of his Haas spell as closing a decade in Formula 1 that “deserved a different finale.”
