DURHAM, N.C. – Alitza Dennard, a junior at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), has been selected as a Nike Summer Intern. Dennard, who competes in women’s cross country and track & field, emphasized the importance of preparedness, effort, and persistence in securing the opportunity.
A Competitive Process
Dennard described the application process as “stressful” and “hectic,” noting it spanned months and involved multiple stages. Following a Nike representative’s visit to NCCU’s campus, she applied and completed timed video submissions before advancing to live virtual interviews. She stated, “I feel really honored to be chosen for this opportunity,” adding that she conducted extensive research and attended seminars to prepare.
Dennard’s initiative was a key factor in her success. She explained, “One thing I realized that I feel made me stick out the most was taking initiative on everything that I did. I would have 72 hours to complete this; I would complete it in the first hour it was given to me.”
Blending Athletics and Academics
Dennard transferred to NCCU prior to her sophomore year and has since become a key contributor to the Eagles’ success, helping the team place third at both the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field Championships. She is majoring in psychology with a minor in criminal justice and intends to apply her academic knowledge to the internship.
Her experience extends beyond academics and athletics; Dennard previously worked at a shoe store called Massive Peach, selling Nike products. She noted this experience gave her insight into the shoe market.
Dennard will serve as a Brand Marketing Undergraduate Intern at Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, for 10 weeks beginning in June. During the internship, she will collaborate on group projects supporting the company’s branding division.
