Nedvěd Brothers Defend Folk Music in Czech Charts

A Legacy of Song

The tribute concerts, organized by Vojtěch Dyk and Jakub Prachař, aim to honor the musical heritage established by Jan Nedvěd and his brother, František. Honza Nedvěd Jr. and his cousin Vojtěch Nedvěd, both of whom pursue individual musical careers, recently collaborated to honor this family legacy. Earlier this year, they performed together in the original lineup of the band Příbuzní during their own festival tour, Nedvědi u stánků, which visited Ostrava, Slavkov u Brna, Ústí nad Labem, and Mikulov.

The festival was conceived to mark the 30th anniversary of the historic Strahov concert and to celebrate the extensive catalog of songs written during the brothers’ era. According to Vojtěch Nedvěd, the performances featured a cross-section of hits from Brontosauři and Spirituál kvintet, alongside the cousins’ own contemporary compositions.

Musical Geniuses and Family Ties

Reflecting on their fathers’ impact, the cousins described them as musical geniuses who sacrificed much for their art. Honza Nedvěd Jr. noted that while most musicians prioritize family, his father placed music above all else, a dedication he credits for the elder Nedvěd’s artistic success. Despite the pressures of their careers, the cousins maintain a close, albeit teasing, relationship that mirrors the dynamic their fathers shared.

The cousins continue to tour extensively throughout the year, balancing festival appearances with intimate performances in theaters and cultural centers. This strategy, inherited from the elder Nedvěds, aims to maintain a consistent connection with their audience while preserving the quality of their live shows. They maintain a particularly strong following in Slovakia, where they continue to build upon the tradition established by their fathers.
