A government ward office building in Nepal’s Baglung district collapsed into the Daram River on September 27, 2026, due to a landslide triggered by days of heavy rainfall.

Footage captured the hillside giving way beneath the building in a matter of seconds, dissolving the structure into the swollen river currents below.

That preemptive evacuation ensured that no staff members or residents were hurt when the foundation finally yielded to the surging earth.

Casualties Mount Across Districts as Severe Weather Intensifies

The disaster in Baglung is part of a broader, destructive weather pattern battering Nepal. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), at least 21 people have died, five are missing, and five others were injured following four days of relentless rain between September 24 and 27. Separate local tallies for Baglung district alone recorded at least 10 deaths and one missing person.

Superintendent of Police Phanindra Prasai, who heads the district police office in Baglung, detailed the regional toll: four deaths and one missing person were registered in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, while another five fatalities occurred in Nisikhola Rural Municipality. Emergency teams, bolstered by security personnel and a Nepali army helicopter, deployed to the hardest-hit zones to assist stranded residents.

Nationwide Emergency Response and Widespread Infrastructure Strain

Authorities have evacuated roughly 3,000 residents from high-risk zones as swollen tributaries threaten further destruction. The NDRRMA issued flash flood alerts across 49 of Nepal’s 77 districts. Power supplies, hydropower projects, and transmission towers have sustained varying degrees of damage in multiple areas, compounding the difficulties faced by emergency crews.

The current deluge arrives while communities are still recovering from catastrophic floods earlier in the season, underscoring the severe seasonal vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure to heavy monsoon precipitation.
