Netflix Orders Manifest Spinoff Series Titled Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery

Netflix has greenlighted Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a sci-fi drama set within the universe of Manifest. The streamer announced the new series on August 28 at 8:28 AM PT, a date and time coinciding with “828 Day,” when fans celebrate the mystery of Flight 828.

Plot and Premise

The spinoff introduces a new cast of characters and original storylines. According to the project’s logline, the story begins when a mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver. The passengers who emerge from the wreckage have no memory of their identities, their origins, or the reason for their presence.

The narrative follows a novice Homeland Security agent and a young social worker who partner with the new arrivals. Together, they attempt to prevent a catastrophe that could end humanity, eventually discovering that they are all components of the puzzle they are attempting to solve.

Creative Team and Production

The series reunites the original creative team from Manifest. Jeff Rake, the original creator and showrunner, returns alongside Laura Putney and Margaret Easley. While Putney and Easley previously served as co-executive producers on the original series, they will now serve as co-creators and co-showrunners for Arrivals.

Speaking on behalf of the showrunners, Rake described the opportunity to bring a new mystery to the world as being beyond my wildest dreams. He noted that Putney and Easley have been trusted colleagues for more than a decade and that their contributions to the Manifest mothership cannot be overstated.

The production is handled by Warner Bros. Television. The executive producing team includes:

  • Jeff Rake, Margaret Easley, and Laura Putney (Showrunners and Writers)
  • Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke of Compari Entertainment
  • Len Goldstein of Tall Baby Productions, as part of an overall deal with WBTV
  • Jacqueline Levine

Development Timeline and Strategy

While Netflix did not confirm the existence of the project until the August 28 announcement, the series has been in progress for several years. Rumors of a spinoff began circulating after the release of Season 4 Part 2 in June 2023. The project entered development at Netflix by the end of 2024, opened a writers room by the end of 2025, and began meeting with directors earlier this month.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, stated that the return of the original creative team ensures the creative continuity essential to this franchise, allowing the streamer to honor the original phenomenon while providing a fresh perspective.

Context of the Manifest Franchise

The original Manifest series premiered on NBC and ran for three seasons before being canceled. Netflix subsequently revived the show for a fourth and final season after viewership for the first two seasons surged on the platform in the U.S. The original series aired from 2018 to 2023.

The franchise has seen significant success on the streaming platform. Since the first half of 2023, the four seasons of Manifest have combined for more than 130 million views. Additionally, Season 4 reached No. 1 in more than 90 countries and spent nine weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV list, though this duration was influenced by the season being split into two parts.

Netflix has a history of using August 28 for major Manifest milestones, having announced the Season 4 order on 8/28/2021 at 8:28 AM PT and releasing the trailer and premiere date for that season on 8/28/2022 at the same time.
