Spain to Distribute Free Condoms in Pharmacies from 2025 to Combat Rising STIs
In a significant step towards combating the escalating sexually transmitted infections (STIs) crisis, the Spanish Ministry of Health has announced a new health initiative. From 2025, Spanish pharmacies will distribute free condoms as part of this comprehensive plan, targeting the alarming increase in STIs, particularly among young people.
Alarming STI Trends in Spain
Recent figures from Spain’s epidemiological surveillance reveal a stark increase in STIs such as gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia. Between 2019 and 2023, chlamydia cases surged by nearly 79%, while gonorrhea and syphilis saw increases of 71.5% and almost 23% respectively. This trend is most pronounced among young people, coinciding with a significant decrease in condom use.
An investigation found that the percentage of girls not using condoms has risen from 10% to 32%. Additionally, 25% of teenagers reported not using condoms at all. These figures have prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to warn Spain about the risks associated with declining condom use.
Free Condoms: A Strategic Intervention
Building on previous campaigns like "Go out however you want, but not without a condom," the new initiative aims to remove financial and practical barriers, making condoms more accessible to young people. Although the program’s details are still being finalized, it is expected to serve both preventive and educational purposes. Pharmacies, being accessible and trusted spaces for youth, will play a crucial role in this endeavor.
