Starting January 1, the official operation of the Rudozem-Dimadio border checkpoint is expected to commence, following a meeting between Smolyan District Governor, Zahari Sirakov, and Christodoulos Topsidis, the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Post-meeting, Topsidis stated that the Greek side will be ready by the end of the year, with only a few small segments left for asphalt paving and marking. Sirakov, however, clarified that the real establishment of border control would depend on the European Commission’s decision on our accession to Schengen. Both governors agreed to advocate to their governments for the passage of buses through the point, currently designated only for tourist car traffic up to 3.5 tons. They both highlighted the economic boost that the long-awaited new border point could bring to both regions.
