Eden’s Reptiles is transitioning from a home-based operation to a physical storefront in Sault Ste. Marie. After six years of operating out of their residence, owners Ernie and Ruth Rowntree are opening a brick-and-mortar location to expand their reach and community presence.
The new shop is located at 812 Queen St. E. And is scheduled for a grand opening on May 23. The event will feature live music performed by a singer from the Korah Collegiate band Mustang Sally.
A Mission of Rescue and Education
The business maintains a strong commitment to animal welfare, with 90 per cent of the animals at Eden’s Reptiles being rescues from across northern Ontario. The couple has taken in numerous lizards, turtles, snakes and frogs, focusing on finding new homes and educating the public on proper care.
The new storefront currently houses approximately 85 reptiles and amphibians, along with a single hedgehog. While the location will function as a standard pet shop selling supplies and pets, the owners intend for it to serve as a broader community hub.
Specialized Care and Community Outreach
Ernie Rowntree brings extensive professional experience to the venture, having spent 12 years as an animal lab technician at York University. His background also includes volunteering at an endangered animal sanctuary in Toronto, where he first gained experience with reptiles.
To encourage engagement, the shop offers “snake snuggles,” where Ernie teaches visitors about snakes while allowing them to hold the animals. The couple also provides guidance on “bio-setups” featuring living substrate and tips for decorating terrariums on a budget.
Looking Ahead
The couple plans to host “Rocking with the Reptiles” evening parties for enthusiasts of all ages. This builds upon years of community work, including bringing “ambassador animals” to children’s birthday parties and hosting home events.
A weekly kids’ club is expected to launch this fall. This program may allow children to interact with different reptiles and assist with the animals while learning about their care.
