Jalisco Police to Fine Drivers Using Certain Types of License Plate Covers Starting Tomorrow

Beginning tomorrow, the Jalisco State Police will impose fines on drivers and motorcyclists using specific types of license plate covers that obstruct visibility. Jorge Alberto Arizpe García, commissioner of the Jalisco State Police, clarified that it’s not necessary to remove the license plate covers as long as they do not block the numbers and the QR code.
"The issue isn’t the license plate cover itself, but rather what it covers. As long as the QR code, numbers, letters, and the plate’s nomenclature aren’t obstructed by any means – whether it’s the cover, a sticker, a strap, or an object – it’s not allowed," Arizpe stated.
He added, "The problem arises when covers sold in certain auto parts stores and agencies bear their brand and cover everything, even if the state is visible. What’s important is that the numbers, letters, and QR code are visible."
Arizpe dismissed the notion that there will be a special operation tomorrow to inspect license plate covers. Instead, supervision will be conducted randomly during the regular service of officers. If a driver is found with an obscured license plate, they will be asked to remove the cover or face a penalty, which could even lead to their vehicle being impounded if the offense persists.
Using a license plate cover that obstructs the visibility of numbers and the QR code is an infraction according to Article 374 of the Mobility Law. This article states that drivers or vehicle owners who circulate with partially or fully hidden plates, altered or unauthorized plates, or any element that obstructs their visibility will be fined between 150 to 200 times the value of the UMA.
"Arizpe concluded, "If the cover doesn’t obstruct the QR code, numbers, and letters, there’s no need to remove it."
