Headline: Tightening the Screws: Ukraine Proposes Steep Fines for Excessive Vehicle Noise

Article:

Ukrainian motorists might soon face a hefty new fine for noisy vehicles, with the government proposing a 17,000 UAH (around $650 USD) penalty for transgressions. This comes as part of a new bill seeking to tighten rules around vehicular noise pollution.

Introduced to the Verkhovna Rada, the bill number 9564 by a cross-party group of lawmakers led by Servant of the People faction chairman, David Arakhamia, aims to combat noise disturbances by imposing significant fines and driver’s license sanctions.

Under the proposed legislation:

  • A first offense would incur a 17,000 UAH fine.
  • Recidivism would double the penalty to 34,000 UAH (around $1,300 USD) and potentially entail driving license suspension for 3 to 6 months, although judges retain the discretion to levy only the fine.

Drivers critic about the upcoming change, highlighting hazards like sudden engine modifications that exacerbate noise levels. According to the explanatory note, such disturbances not only jeopardize citizens’ peace and comfort but can also cause panic, especially during martial law, as the sounds may resemble enemy drone or missile strikes.

Currently, the bill is already on the Parliament’s agenda, awaiting further debate and voting. If passed, Ukrainian drivers could face a hefty price for disturbing the peace.
