Brace for Icy Blast and Stormy Start: Winter on the Horizon for 2025
After a year dominated by record-breaking warmth, the weather has a chilly surprise in store for us as we step into 2025. Meteorologist Floris Lafeber of Weerplaza forecasts a sharp drop in temperatures, bringing even snowfall, after a tumultuous start to the new year marked by strong winds and heavy rain.
Wild Weather Welcome in 2025
The final days of 2024 won’t be calm, with Monday bringing cloudy skies and temperatures hovering around 8°C. "It’s going to get milder, but the wind will pick up significantly, especially during New Year’s Eve," Lafeber warns, predicting wind speeds of up to 75 km/h in Brabant Province. Fireworks enthusiasts, beware – these gusts can quickly displace even a-launch bottle, posing a potential hazard.
The chaos isn’t contained to the year’s end, as strong winds are expected to intensify throughout the first few days of January. Residents in Brabant’s western regions could face wind speeds topping 100 km/h by the night of January 1-2, with temperatures lingering around 8°C.
Snowballs and Ice Skating on the Horizon?
As the year progresses, the likelihood of snowball fights and snowman-building increases. While Lafeber hesitates to promise ice skating quite yet, as it depends on consistent freezing temperatures and no wind, he confirms that colder weather and potential winter precipitation are on the way.
"True winter weather is a broad term," Lafeber explains, "but it’s definitely going to get colder, and we could see some winter precipitation." This aligns well with the typical winter season, he adds.
Stormy Start before Winter’s Arrival
Despite the potential snowfall from Friday, our new year will begin amidst stormy conditions. Plan accordingly for strong winds and heavy rain during the celebrations before the long-awaited winter chill sets in.
