As the clock struck midnight and fireworks lit up the sky, a crowd in the city’s bustling centrum turned their attention from celebration to confrontation. assailants hurled fireworks and stones at officers, prompting a swift response from the police.
"Agents were assaulted while on duty, putting their safety and the safety of the public at risk," said a spokesperson for the Groningen police department. "This behavior is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it."
The police have since issued charges against several individuals involved in the incident. The charges include assaulting a public official and endangering public safety.
The incident in Groningen was not an isolated one. Across the country, police faced similar challenges on New Year’s Eve. In Zutphen, the first lightspectakel of the year drew large crowds, while in other cities, reports of fireworks-related injuries and incidents surfaced.
Premier Schoof weighed in on the situation, urging calm and compliance with safety regulations. "Please, let us celebrate responsibly. Follow the rules and prioritize everyone’s safety," she implored.
