"New Year’s Eve: Hundreds of Youth Clash in Norway’s Tromsø; Six Detained over Fireworks Misuse and Alcohol Seizure"

TROMSØ, Norway — Around midnight on New Year’s Day, a crowd of nearly a hundred young people gathered at the old Alfheim swimming hall in Tromsø, despite repeated warnings and the presence of four police patrols. The majority of the group were minors, according to the police.

Eirik Kileng, operations leader at Troms Police District, emphasized, "It’s primarily minors who’ve assembled here. We urge parents to fetch their children from the scene."

The main issues included reckless use of fireworks, with six individuals, all minors, being removed for being under the influence or for firing fireworks into the crowd and even at the police’s patrol vehicles.

Kileng stated, "We’ve also seized alcohol at the scene, a recurring issue during these gatherings."

This has been a problem area in previous years, with minors congregating around the old swimming hall on Alfheim. The use of fireworks irresponsibly has been a persistent issue, with the police taking measures to address it during this year’s celebrations.

Despite the disturbances, the city center remained peaceful throughout the night, with no reports of trouble or unrest. The only notable incident was a serious event at The Edge, where a young woman fell into the sea. Swift police action ensured her safety.

The police had been preparing for such incidents, with additional resources deployed to prevent issues like these, ensuring a safer New Year’s Eve for everyone.
