Newport Harbor Boys’ Soccer Rides Late Surge to CIF Title Match
Newport Harbor High School’s boys’ soccer team is heading to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship after a dramatic 2-1 victory over top-seeded Downey on Saturday night. A party erupted at Davidson Field as the Sailors rallied late in the game, securing their spot in the final.
Late Goals Seal the Victory
The Sailors, seemingly on the brink for much of the match, found a surge of energy in the final five minutes. Senior Ali Omar scored a crucial penalty kick, tying the game after a handball violation in the box. Just three minutes later, Brandon Markert blasted in the game-winning goal, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Omar’s penalty kick, hitting off the fingertips of Downey’s goalie Isaiah Villagrana, proved to be a turning point. The winning goal followed a deep throw-in and a series of bounces that ultimately found Markert near the far post.
A Familiar Path to the Championship
This isn’t the first time Newport Harbor has reached this stage. The team also competed for the Division 2 title in 2024, demonstrating a consistent level of success. Several players, including Markert and the Baker brothers, Hayden and Landon, were also part of that 2024 championship team.
Coach Ignacio “Nacho” Cid emphasized the program’s culture of hard work, instilled from day one, as a key factor in their continued success. He also acknowledged the strong performance of Downey, praising their organization and individual players.
Beyond Newport Harbor: Pacifica Christian Advances
The success wasn’t limited to Newport Harbor. Pacifica Christian Orange County also secured a spot in their respective CIF final. Shaun Sandhu’s late goal lifted the Tritons to a 1-0 victory over San Jacinto Leadership Academy in the Division 8 semifinals. Pacifica Christian will now host Rio Hondo Prep in the championship match.
Pacifica Christian’s head coach, Johnny Marmelstein, brings a wealth of experience, having previously won four CIF titles while leading the St. Margaret’s girls’ soccer team.
Looking Ahead: The Championship Matches
Newport Harbor will face Bishop Amat for the Division 2 title on Saturday at 6 p.m. At Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach. Pacifica Christian will host Rio Hondo Prep, with the date and time to be determined.
