Farage pre-empted the official declaration by telling supporters he had won “fairly convincingly” on the hottest day of the year. However, he skipped the official count at Clacton Leisure Centre, citing what he called an organised campaign to disrupt the result. According to a Reform UK spokesperson, Essex Police advised Farage not to attend due to a credible threat against him. The Press Association subsequently reported that Essex Police did not tell Farage, or any other candidate, not to attend the count. An Essex Police spokesperson stated the force maintained a proportionate and robust operation to ensure safety and security.
Rival Candidates and Mainstream Opposition Reactions
With other mainstream parties declining to stand, a record 34 candidates were standing. Satirical candidate Count Binface, a character created by comedian Jonathan David Harvey, finished second with 9,455 votes. Speaking to Sky News, Count Binface pointed to the possibility of a second by-election if Farage is found to have broken parliamentary rules, quipping that the contest resembled a two-legged match like the Carabao Cup or the cold war. Turnout was 44.37 per cent, just over 14 per cent down from the 2024 general election.
Labour chair Bridget Phillipson stated that Farage spent 38 days fighting a bin to deflect attention from sleaze and scandals. A Conservative Party spokesperson similarly stated that the by-election stunt would not draw a line under questions regarding the fishy £5 million donation.
