The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of Xavier University on Saturday in DeKalb, Illinois. Despite a strong start in doubles play, the Huskies ultimately fell short against their opponents.
A Competitive Match
The Huskies, now 2-1 on the season, secured the doubles point with wins from the pairings of Iker Dellien Velasco and Chiao Bo Suo Nan (6-4), and Lorenzo Leti Messina and Federico Scotuzzi (6-4). However, Xavier responded strongly in singles competition.
Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and Nikola Puntaric each earned singles victories for NIU. Gaztambide Arrastia defeated Nick Herdoiza 6-4, 6-2, while Puntaric bested Max Pettingell 6-4, 6-3. Despite these wins, Xavier took three of the six singles matches, including a decisive three-set victory over Federico Scotuzzi.
Singles Decides the Outcome
The match ultimately hinged on the final singles contest, where Federico Scotuzzi faced a tough opponent in Bode Campbell.
