Macron’s Stance Clear: No Constitution Changes Under His Leadership

In a definitive statement, North Macedonia‘s Prime Minister, Christian Mitkoski, and leader of the VMRO-DPMNE party, has declared that as long as he heads the government and party, no constitutional changes involving the recognition of Bulgarians will be enacted.

"There will be no constitutional changes in this regard while I remain premier and party leader," Mitkoski asserted at his year-end press conference. He underscored that without VMRO-DPMNE, such changes would not materialize, noting the lack of political will in Brussels for Skopje’s EU membership, reported BGNES.

Mitkoski reaffirmed his position that these changes could only be discussed if guaranteed by Brussels. He stressed the need for a joint plan ensuring North Macedonia’s EU integration process isn’t impeded by bilateral disputes, such as those experienced over the past 20 years.

Expressing disappointment in Brussels’ lack of political will in resolving the Macedonian issue, Mitkoski emphasized the need for concrete actions, not just declarative promises. He stated that the integration process should not be merely formal but include genuine efforts and plans to overcome obstacles.

Responding to the EU’s demand for constitutional changes, Mitkoski maintained that he won’t initiate such steps until assured they’ll lead to a final resolution of the dispute. He prefers acting on certain grounds to make decisions that will end the process, not just initiate it. Mitkoski praised the realistic stance of Parliament Speaker, Afrim Gashi, who acknowledges that without VMRO-DPMNE’s support, constitutional changes are unattainable.
