Noble Carbon Revolutionizes EV Charging Installations with Disrupt 2023 Appearance

Massachusetts-based startup Noble Carbon is attempting to remove one of the steepest financial barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption: the expensive electrical panel upgrade. The company has developed smart circuit breakers that dynamically adjust power distribution in real time, allowing high-demand appliances like EV chargers, heat pumps, and induction stoves to run without exceeding a home’s existing electrical capacity.

Noble Carbon Targets the ‘Pain’ of Electrical Panel Upgrades

Dynamic Allocation Over Costly Infrastructure

The technology monitors electricity usage and shifts power away from non-essential systems during peak demand to prevent overloads. It is a surgical approach to energy management. “In order to avoid a main panel upgrade, you really only need control on your three to six largest loads,” said Spencer Fields, Noble Carbon’s head of marketing.

The financial stakes are high. A study indicates that upgrading electrical panels can more than double the total cost of an EV charger installation. To counter this, the company designed its breakers to fit into existing panel slots with an installation time of under five minutes.

From South African Blackouts to the Startup Battlefield

The company’s origins trace back to CEO Jared Lebos, who dealt with rolling blackouts in his home country of South Africa. Alongside co-founder and CTO Andrew Crane, Lebos sought a solution to these systemic energy challenges. That effort has now landed Noble Carbon as one of 200 startups competing in the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a pitch competition in San Francisco in October in which 20 finalists will present on the main stage.

The technology is already moving out of the lab. Through a partnership with utility company Eversource, Noble Carbon’s breakers are currently being installed in up to 200 multifamily units across Massachusetts.

The Threshold of Regulatory Approval

Practical application would mean a home could sustain a holiday gathering—running air conditioning, an oven, and multiple televisions—by temporarily throttling power to an EV charger to prevent a blackout.
