Noli de Castro celebrated his 77th birthday on July 6, appearing recovered from a surgery for an undisclosed illness that sidelined him last year.
The news came via a Facebook post from his daughter, Katherine “Kat” de Castro. The director-general at the Philippine Information Agency and former ABS-CBN journalist used the occasion to offer a tribute to her father, expressing gratitude for his healing.
A Private Battle for Healing
“Dad, your healing reminded me that every day with you is a gift I should never take for granted,” Kat wrote. She noted that her father’s integrity and dedication to service served as the blueprint for her own career in public service.

The specific nature of the illness remains private. While Kat had previously asked the public for prayers and later confirmed her father was “okay” after the procedure, the family has not disclosed the medical details of the surgery.
Sciatica and the Toll of Misinformation
This recent surgery is not the only health hurdle for the veteran broadcaster. In 2025, de Castro was forced to take a temporary leave from his radio and television programs. His daughter attributed the absence to complications from sciatica.
Beyond physical ailments, de Castro has fought a recurring war against digital falsehoods. In 2021, Kat de Castro had to debunk online claims that her father had died after slipping into a coma.
The toll of these hoaxes was addressed during a congressional hearing in April 2025. De Castro stated he has grown accustomed to the false reports, though he admitted they deeply affect his family.
From TV Patrol to the Vice Presidency
De Castro remains one of the most recognizable figures in Philippine media and politics. He built his reputation as an anchor for “TV Patrol” and as the host of the public affairs show “Kabayan.”
His influence extended into the highest levels of government. From 2004 to 2010, he served as the 12th vice president of the Philippines under the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Managing Health and Public Image
With his 77th birthday marking a milestone of recovery, de Castro is positioned to continue his activities in the public eye.
As he moves forward, his family remains vigilant.
