Norwich’s Unthank Road set for three months of roadworks

Norfolk County Council is set to begin major improvements to the Unthank Road and Christchurch Road junction in Norwich on Monday, January 12. The project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow at a location where five personal injury collisions have been recorded over the past three years, up to June 2025.

Planned Improvements

The work will involve replacing and upgrading the existing traffic lights, as well as installing a new puffin crossing on Christchurch Road to improve pedestrian access. Additionally, filter lanes for cyclists on Christchurch Road will be widened.

Did You Know? A feasibility study, funded by local council members representing Town Close, Nelson, and Eaton, recommended the puffin crossing upgrade as early as August 2023.

Traffic Disruption Expected

Motorists should expect significant disruption during the nearly three months of construction. Christchurch Road will be closed on both sides of the junction, and temporary two-way traffic signals will be in place on Unthank Road. Towards the end of the project, the entire junction will be closed for three days to allow for resurfacing.

According to a Norfolk County Council spokesman, these measures “are required to conduct the works in a safe and efficient manner for both the public and our operatives for the duration of works.”

Expert Insight: Large-scale infrastructure projects often require extended closures and diversions. While disruptive in the short term, these improvements are intended to address documented safety concerns and create a more efficient transportation network for Norwich residents.

The council confirmed it does not require planning permission for the work, but is legally obligated to provide public notice of the proposals.
