Police Officers Attacked with Fireworks During New Year Celebrations

Several police officers in the Netherlands were targeted with fireworks during New Year’s Eve celebrations, in incidents that authorities have condemned as dangerous and unacceptable. The attacks were captured on video and shared widely on social media.

In one incident, a group of individuals could be seen hurling fireworks at officers in The Hague. The attackers, who were not immediately deterred by the officers’ presence, continued launching fireworks even as police attempted to disperse the crowd. In another video, a man in Rotterdam was caught on camera throwing what appeared to be a ‘bomb’ at a group of officers, in an act that could have had devastating consequences.

Authorities have confirmed that multiple officers were injured in the attacks, although the extent of their injuries remains unclear. Police have vowed to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. "These actions are not only reckless but also extremely dangerous, putting not only officers but also bystanders at risk," a spokesperson for the National Police said.

This year’s New Year celebrations have seen a host of incidents involving fireworks being used to attack police and bystanders. Similar incidents have been reported in several other Dutch cities, prompting law enforcement to issue warnings about the dangers of misusing fireworks.

In response to the incidents, local authorities are considering implementing stricter regulations on the sale and use of fireworks. An underground market for illegal fireworks has also been identified as a contributing factor to these incidents, with authorities vowing to crack down on the unregulated sale of these potentially dangerous items.

Meanwhile, injured officers have been praised for their professionalism and restraint in the face of these attacks. "Our officers maintained a high level of composure, demonstrating the best of what Dutch policing has to offer," the National Police spokesperson added.
