Olinia: The Upcoming Affordable Electric Vehicle Manufacturer in Mexico

Mexico is set to welcome its first domestic electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, Olinia, poised to become the most accessible car brand in the country. With plans to launch three models by the end of the current administration’s term – personal mobility vehicles, neighborhood mobility cars, and cargo distribution vans – Olinia aims to make electric vehicles affordable for millions of Mexicans.

Roberto Capuano, coordinator of the Olinia project, has revealed that the initial range of Mexican-made mini electric vehicles will be priced between MXN 90,000 and MXN 150,000. Capuano stated, "Currently, the EVs available in Mexico are expensive and out of reach for most families. Olinia will change that."

Olinia will compete with several established brands offering the most affordable EV options in Mexico, such as SEV, JAC, Renault, BYD, and MG Motor. Francisco Cabeza, president of the Mexican Electric Mobility Association (AMIVE), believes that Olinia’s entry could spark investments and invigorate the market.

"With these prices, Olinia will be competing with the smallest models from BYD, JAC, and SEV," Cabeza said. "We’ve tracked around 70 hybrid and electric vehicle brands in Mexico, and many of these could potentially have very economical prices but lack adequate after-sales support."

Currently, the most affordable EVs in Mexico are:

  1. SEV E Wan Cross – Starting from MXN 299,300, with a range of up to 300 kilometers per charge.
  2. JAC E10X – Priced from MXN 357,000, offering an eco-drive autonomy of up to 360 kilometers and a 31.4 kWh LFP battery.
  3. Renault Kwid E-Tech – Available for MXN 375,000, it can reach 298 kilometers on a single charge and accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.1 seconds.
  4. BYD Dolphin Mini – Priced at MXN 398,800, the smallest EV in the BYD lineup seeks to capture a significant share of Mexico’s electric vehicle market.
  5. MG4 – Offered at MXN 459,900, this hatchback provides an impressive range of 520 kilometers.

Olinia’s affordable pricing strategy could disrupt the Mexican EV market and bring electric mobility to a broader range of consumers. As the first domestic EV manufacturer, Olinia has the potential to drive Mexico’s transition towards a more sustainable and affordable electric vehicle future.
