A recent report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) suggests that the record temperatures experienced in recent years are likely to continue for the next five years. The report forecasts a high probability of continued, or even record-breaking, temperatures until 2029. This news underscores the urgent need for focused climate action.

The WMO’s findings indicate an 80% chance that the record-breaking year of 2024 will be matched within the next half-decade. Furthermore, there’s an 86% probability that at least one of these years will surpass the 1.5-degree warming threshold, a key benchmark in global climate agreements.

Ko Barrett, the WMO’s Deputy Secretary-General, stated, “We’ve just experienced the ten warmest years on record. Sadly, this WMO report shows no sign of a break in the coming years. This will translate to a growing negative impact on our economies, our daily lives, our ecosystems, and our planet.”

Climate Trends: What to Expect in the Near Future

While the latest predictions are concerning for climate agreements aiming to keep warming well below 2 degrees Celsius and ideally at 1.5 degrees Celsius, these targets are not expected to be breached in the next five years. The long-term warming, as averaged over several decades, is still expected to remain under 1.5 degrees Celsius during this period.

However, this does not mean the planet will become more habitable, which is the goal of climate policy. The WMO emphasizes that the consequences are already enormous at the current level of warming. Societies and nature are already dealing with heatwaves, extreme rainfall, droughts, and rising sea levels, and this is not expected to decrease.

The report aligns with the longstanding calls from climate scientists to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change. It also stresses that every fraction of a degree of warming intensifies the negative effects of climate change.

The WMO anticipates with reasonable certainty that northern Europe, the Sahel region, Alaska, and northern Siberia will experience wetter-than-average conditions. In contrast, areas like the Amazon are expected to face drier periods. South Asia, which has seen above-average rainfall in recent years, is also expected to remain wetter than average in the coming five years.

Above-average temperatures are projected across most of the globe, with the Arctic region being particularly affected. The period from November to March in the Arctic is expected to experience a warming of approximately 2.4 degrees Celsius above the average temperature of the last 30 years.

This also implies a further reduction in sea ice in the Barents Sea and the Bering Sea. Similarly, in Antarctica, less sea ice is expected in winter compared to normal levels.
