OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman and his wife Anna have donated $5.5 million to secure 63 acres of shoreline at Big Bear Lake in Fawnskin, California. The July 2026 gift pushed a community fundraising drive past its $10 million goal, halting a county-approved luxury development near the nesting grounds of internet-famous bald eagles Jackie and Shadow.
A grassroots campaign that spent months relying on small donations from more than 25,000 contributors closed the gap on a roughly $10 million community fundraising target with a single multi-million-dollar contribution. The property at the center of the acquisition is Moon Camp, a 63-acre stretch of forest and shoreline on the north shore of Big Bear Lake.
Conservationists designate the parcel as the last undeveloped sliver of shoreline on the lake. According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, the land serves as an ecological corridor supporting rare endemic plants, San Bernardino flying squirrels, and various waterfowl. San Bernardino County’s board had previously approved a project for the site featuring roughly 50 custom homes and a marina, following local opposition that included over 5,000 opposing emails.
How the Moon Camp Purchase Came Together
The path to acquiring the land began months before the final transaction closed. Sandy Steers, executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley and a board member of the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust, negotiated a limited purchase agreement for the property before her death on February 11, 2026. That agreement established a fixed price and a strict deadline to raise the necessary funds.
Following Steers’ death, the nonprofit launched a public fundraising campaign in mid-February 2026. Jenny Voisard, spokesperson and fundraising lead for the organization, helped drive an effort that brought in nearly half of the $10 million target through more than 25,000 small contributions. To complete the purchase before the deadline, the Brockman family stepped in with a contribution exceeding $5.5 million, as reported by the Victorville Daily Press.

The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust planned to finalize the purchase by July 31, 2026. Escrow closed later that month, with the trust acquiring the acreage for permanent conservation, while leftover funds were designated for closing costs, taxes, legal fees, and ongoing stewardship.
Jackie and Shadow’s Habitat and Medical Challenges
While the Moon Camp parcel does not contain the specific Jeffrey Pine tree where the bald eagles Jackie and Shadow nest about 145 feet in the air, conservationists argued that protecting the surrounding shoreline was vital. The habitat provides a critical hunting and perching corridor for the resident pair, whose live nest camera draws a global audience.
The land deal coincided with a health crisis for Jackie. Rescuers found the eagle fighting with two younger birds on the lakeshore in mid-July, unable to fly. She was rushed to the Ojai Raptor Center, where veterinarians diagnosed her with severe anemia and kidney inflammation. After receiving a lifesaving blood transfusion and recovering enough to leave intensive care, her condition fluctuated.
Veterinarians at the center stated they would continue additional advanced diagnostic testing to determine the underlying cause of her illness and establish next steps for her treatment plan.
Philanthropic Giving and Political Context
The donation represents an unusual foray into environmental philanthropy for the Brockmans, whose charitable giving has largely focused on political causes. Earlier in 2026, the couple also placed $50 million into Leading the Future, a super PAC supporting lighter artificial intelligence regulation that Greg Brockman helped launch alongside Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.
Those political contributions drew scrutiny and prompted responses from OpenAI regarding corporate separation. OpenAI issued a statement clarifying that employee political donations are made in a personal capacity and do not reflect company direction.
Reflecting on their environmental contribution, Anna Brockman noted that the eagles inspire perseverance and a sense of connectedness to something greater, adding that the couple felt proud to support the community effort.
