Ormund Hightower traps Rhaenyra in Tumbleton

The Tumbleton Occupation and Lord Ormund Hightower

HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 4 introduces Prince Daeron Targaryen and Lord Ormund Hightower as key antagonists to Queen Rhaenyra. The episode centers on Ormund’s strategic occupation of Tumbleton and the revelation of Daeron’s presence as a dragonrider, shifting the military balance of the ongoing war.

Queen Rhaenyra’s hold on power is slipping. Despite her recent coronation, the latest installment of House of the Dragon reveals a fractured administration and a resurgent enemy. While Rhaenyra attempts to stabilize King’s Landing, Lord Ormund Hightower has executed a calculated move in Tumbleton, creating a tactical dilemma that prevents the Queen from using her most powerful assets without killing her own supporters.

The Tumbleton Occupation and Lord Ormund Hightower

Lord Ormund Hightower has effectively trapped Rhaenyra in a catch-22. After a supposed surrender, Ormund marched into the loyalist town of Tumbleton and began forcibly quartering his troops in private homes, according to IGN. This strategy shields the Hightower army from dragonfire; if Rhaenyra attacks the town, she risks charring the very supporters she intends to protect.

The episode paints Ormund as a volatile contradiction. He displays a prissy aversion to dirt and a fastidious sense of dress, yet he is prone to unpredictable violence. NPR reported a scene where Ormund “plopped his bathtub in the middle of” a local noble’s living room, standing naked to assert dominance while instructing his squire on how to treat those beneath you.

Ormund’s cruelty extends to his own allies. In a sequence described by IGN as establishing him as a villain, Ormund pretended to forgive a man named Leo for defending his sister Kat from a rapist in the troops, only to later abduct Leo and demand that Prince Daeron execute him.

The Reveal of Prince Daeron Targaryen

The red-headed squire who has accompanied Ormund since the start of the season is revealed to be Daeron, the youngest son of Alicent and rider of the dragon Tessarion. This introduction marks a significant departure from the source material; Theringer notes that Daeron is silver-haired in the book Fire & Blood, but auburn-haired in the series.

This physical change provides a narrative explanation for Daeron’s absence. Alicent explains that she sent him to Oldtown as a baby to prevent him from becoming like his brothers.

The Dragon Proliferation Era

The war has entered a phase of mass proliferation. As of the end of Episode 4, there are 10 fighting-size dragons active in the conflict. While George R.R. Martin compared dragons to nuclear weapons in 2022, stating They are the most devastating weapon and cause great destruction, massive loss of life, the show highlights the instability of these weapons because the riders themselves are difficult to control.

Rhaenyra’s Fracturing Council

Inside the Red Keep, Rhaenyra’s “Teeny Tiny Council” is struggling with financial instability and political friction. Mysaria has urged the Queen to appoint a Master of Coin to take the fall for their money troubles, leading to the appointment of Ser Torrhen Manderly. Meanwhile, Corlys Velaryon has departed the capital to return to his island, leaving Alyn to take his place.

The council is also purging the past. When Orwyle attempted to use the traditional billiard-ball tokens to register attendance, he was informed that such items are now relics of the old regime, as reported by NPR.
