Oshawa Arson Suspect Faces 14 Charges

Roshvin Crofton, a 24-year-old man from Ajax, faces 14 additional charges following a joint investigation by the Toronto Police Service and the Durham Regional Police Service into an Aug. 24 fire that destroyed an unoccupied home in Oshawa and damaged neighbouring residences. Police arrested Crofton on Sept. 28, and he appeared in court on Sept. 29. Investigators confirmed that Crofton is also the suspect charged in an Aug. 27 arson at the Scarborough home of Liberal MP Salma Zahid.

Oshawa House Destroyed and Neighbours Evacuated

The destructive blaze erupted at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Aug. 24 near Rossland Road West and Church Street North in Oshawa. Durham Regional Police Service officers responded to the fire call, which completely destroyed an unoccupied home. Investigators reported that one of the neighbouring residences sustained “significant” damage while people were inside. Fortunately, all occupants managed to get out of the house safely. Police stated that several other nearby homes were doused in an accelerant but did not ignite.

Connection to the Scarborough MP Arson Investigation

Toronto police confirmed that Crofton is the same individual charged in connection with an Aug. 27 arson targeting Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home in Scarborough. While Crofton remains in custody following his Sept. 28 arrest and subsequent Sept. 29 court date, authorities note that a second suspect in the Scarborough incident remains at large. Investigators are actively seeking information regarding the whereabouts of a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata between Aug. 23 and the Aug. 27 arson.
