Headline: Brace for Heavy Snowfall: Oslo Braces for Up to 50 cm in Next 48 Hours
Article:
Oslo residents are being urged to prepare for challenging conditions as a major snowstorm approaches. The Meteorological Institute has issued an orange alert, warning of significant snow accumulation over the next two days.
"It’s going to be quite challenging, even though we’re starting off calm on Monday," said state meteorologist Pernille Borander. She advises commuters to allocate extra time for travel and consider if their journeys are necessary.
Snow Accumulation and Visibility Concerns
The heaviest snowfall is expected Monday afternoon, accompanied by strong winds that could cause drifting snow and reduced visibility. Borander warns that the snowfall could become concentrated, leading to poor visibility.
"Wear your ski goggles, maybe?" a reporter suggested jokingly.
"Absolutely, 100% behind that," Borander replied, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Tuesday’s forecast includes a transition from snow to rain.

City Preparedness
Oslo’s snow-clearing vehicles are fully operational, with initial routes already underway. Joakim Hjertum, head of snow clearance operations, urges residents to prepare for heavy snowfall later in the day.
"It’s all hands on deck, and everyone should focus on clearing the snow to ensure people can get to their destinations," Hjertum advised.

Public Transportation Alerts
Public transport services are operating as normal, but delays and cancellations are possible throughout the day. Ruter, the public transit authority, encourages commuters to plan ahead and follow real-time updates on their mobile app or website.
"Consider whether your travels are necessary and plan your day accordingly," advises Eilif Swensen, Ruter’s communications leader.

Buses are running as normal on Monday morning, but commuters should be prepared for potential changes throughout the day.

Rail Permutations
Reduced train services are in effect due to the expected heavy snowfall. Lars Berge, region director at Bane Nor, explains that the priority is to maintain operational reliability.
"When it becomes too crowded, the traffic comes to a halt. That’s why we’ve reduced our services already," Berge said.
