Driver Eludes Police After Multiple Rollovers on A28/A50, Found Drunk at the Wheel
In the early hours of Saturday, a 49-year-old man from Drachten found himself in a harrowing situation while driving his cargo van on the A28/A50 at the Hattemerbroek interchange. The man, who should have been home after a night out, instead became the subject of an intense police chase following a dramatic rollover accident.
Witnesses reported the van, traveling from Heerde, zigzagging across lanes before ultimately losing control. The vehicle flipped multiple times before the driver made the fateful decision to flee the scene rather than render aid or await emergency services.
Authorities, alerted to the incident around 1:00 AM, immediately launched a search for the errant driver. Police found the man a short time later, just a few kilometers away from the scene of the crash.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was subsequently taken into custody facing potential charges.
The carnage left behind by the fleeing driver was dramatic – a twisted heap of metal and shattered glass interrupted only by the skeleton of a traffic light pole, snapped like a twig upon impact.
While the investigation into the full extent of the driver’s reckless actions continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the tragic consequences of driving under the influence.
