Patriarch Daniel: Christ is Born! Let Us Praise Him!

Headline: First Rite after Coronation: Patriarch Daniel Marks Christmas in Sv. Aleksandër Nyevski Cathedral

Patriarch Daniel has, for the first time since his installation, officiated the Holy Divine Liturgy for Christmas Day at the cathedral of Sv. Aleksandër Nyevski in Sofia. Speaking to the gathered congregation, he said, "Christ is Born! Let us Glorify Him! We rejoice, and we are grateful to God for His immense mercy in becoming man. There is nothing greater than this priceless Guest visiting the human race and offering us the chance to become like Him."

In his homily, Patriarch Daniel exhorted the congregation to turn towards their hearts and reflect on the significance of Christmas. "Rejoice, we are grateful to God for His immense mercy in becoming man. There is nothing greater than this priceless Guest visiting the human race and giving us the opportunity to be like Him," he repeated.

The patriarch echoed the Gospel story of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, using it as a reminder of humanity’s new beginning. He beseeched God for the Bulgarian people to come to know, believe, and embrace what God has brought us. "Let us learn from the faith and wisdom of the Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph the Betrothed, the joy of the angels, the faith of the shepherds and apostles. Let us enrich ourselves with the love God has brought to us," he added.

The cathedral was filled with worshipers seeking blessings and expressing their gratitude. "I pray for health at home. I wish for many achievements, prosperity, and happiness," said Rumen Gelev, a believer. Another devout woman, preferring to remain anonymous, shared, "I wish for hope. This is the best place we can come to. The figure of Daniel gives me hope for the future of Bulgaria."

While today’s religious celebrations bring prayer and wishes for salvation, good health, and prosperity for all, for Christians, Christmas marks not just a celebration of Jesus’ birth but a renewal in the hearts of every person. "We should rely on faith. Without God, we are nothing. Today is a new beginning for the entire human race," noted Alexander Todorov.

In observance of the sacred occasion, Christmas, or as the Orthodox Church refers to it, the "Feast of the Nativity in the Flesh of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," is an invitation to humble oneself, cultivate hope, and nurture love among people.
