A 91-year-old peace activist completed a 220km (138 mile) walk across Ireland, arriving in Dublin on Wednesday to petition the government to bar US military flights.

Activist Completes Two-Week Protest Walk

Lelia Doolan, a film producer and activist, ended her two-week trek at the gates of parliament accompanied by supporters. Doolan protested against the US military’s use of Shannon airport in County Clare, stating, “US military planes are landing without anybody ever agreeing in government to search them or see what’s in them. Shannon is a civilian airport. It’s not a military airport.”

Did You Know? Activists have protested against the agreement allowing US military aircraft to refuel at Shannon airport for decades.

The Irish government maintains that Shannon airport is not used in US combat operations and that there is no evidence of weapons or supplies for attacks transiting Irish airspace. Doolan, however, believes permitting US military flights violates Irish neutrality, arguing that “It doesn’t have to continue.”

Doolan began her walk on March 31, receiving support along the route in Limerick, Nenagh, Roscrea, Portlaoise, Newbridge, Naas, and other towns. The journey also served as a memorial to her late friend and fellow campaigner, Margaretta D’Arcy.

Renewed Scrutiny of US Military Flights

The protest comes amid increased scrutiny of US military flights in Europe. Italy recently denied the use of an airbase in Sicily, and last week, a man was arrested for allegedly damaging a US air force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft at Shannon airport.

Expert Insight: The timing of this protest, coinciding with heightened tensions in the Middle East and similar actions in other European countries, suggests a growing wave of opposition to the perceived facilitation of military operations through civilian airspace.

Upon reaching Leinster House, Doolan was greeted with cheers, Palestinian flags, and support from opposition politicians. She praised the people of Ireland, stating, “If you only knew how wonderful the people of Ireland are. If only you knew how engaging they are, decent and intelligent they are.” She then read a poem and joined supporters in a peace song.

Ivana Bacik, leader of the Labour party, praised Doolan in the Dáil and called for a halt to US military planes using Shannon airport. The taoiseach, Micheál Martin, expressed respect for Doolan but cautioned against “miscategorising Shannon airport,” suggesting it could cause damage to the airport.
