Manuel Pellegrini Defends Troy Parrott
Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has pointed to the Republic of Ireland’s international fixture schedule as the reason for rotating forward Troy Parrott at club level, rte.ie reported.
Parrott started in attack during Wednesday’s Champions League defeat against Borussia Dortmund and featured in last weekend’s 2-1 La Liga win over Malaga. That domestic start arrived during an injury absence for teammate Cucho Hernandez. Since arriving in Spain during the summer transfer window, the 24-year-old Dubliner has started every European match for Betis. However, he has made just three starts in La Liga alongside five substitute appearances and two matches as an unused substitute.
Pellegrini addressed the rotation strategy after the Malaga fixture. He explained that playing four full matches for Ireland across the combined September and October UEFA Nations League windows impacted the striker’s minutes for the Andalusian side.
“We have been rotating him because during the international break he played all four games for his national team so we have been rotating him here with Nelson Deossa,” Pellegrini said.
Extra.ie reported that Pellegrini also defended the forward following a scoreless run in domestic competition. Parrott has not scored since netting a Champions League winner against Lille in September.
“When he scored those goals in the decisive matches, he wasn’t the best player in the world then. He’s not the worst now either,” Pellegrini said. “I think he’s at a level that keeps him more or less consistent, and the goals will come sooner or later.”
Heimir Hallgrimsson Responds to Rotation Claims
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson disputed Pellegrini’s assessment regarding player fatigue when announcing a 24-man squad for upcoming fixtures against Austria and Kosovo.
Hallgrimsson highlighted Parrott’s heavy workload at former club AZ Alkmaar, where the forward regularly completed full 90-minute appearances across multiple competitions over two seasons.
“He should look further back because Troy played every game for AZ, 90 minutes every game, fully fit,” Hallgrimsson said. “He played every game 90 minutes, so I don’t know if they’re running more in Spain. But that’s his strength.”
The Ireland manager added that the national team coaching staff carefully monitors player loads to prevent exhaustion.
“We’ll look at this and if we need to rest him, we’ll rest him. That has always been our role,” Hallgrimsson said. “We’re not overloading any players. We haven’t had many injuries in the national team.”
