Pensioner Receives Arrears Letter Over €16: A Review

Electric Ireland is seeking to “review” a case where it was accused of “threatening” a pensioner over around €16 in arrears, after the matter was raised by a TD.

The Case of the €16 Arrears Dispute

According to Deputy Mattie McGrath, the affected customer, who is in poor health, was placed on a €75-per-week payment plan to clear around €800 in arrears. Despite the customer paying €80 per week, he received a letter from Electric Ireland alleging he had failed to maintain the plan and owed a balance of €16.41. The letter warned of potential cancellation of the payment plan and implied the disconnection of his gas supply.

Mr. McGrath stated that the amount has since been fully cleared. He noted that the customer had been under significant financial strain due to funeral costs and broader cost-of-living pressures. The TD characterized the correspondence as “aggressive and intimidating,” noting it caused the pensioner “significant fear and upset.”

The TD said the man is also in poor health and had received “an aggressive and intimidating arrears letter warning of possible cancellation of his payment plan and implied disconnection” despite owing around €16.

Mr McGrath said ESB, which operates Electric Ireland, reported €636 million in pre‑tax profits and a record €2.7 billion in capital investment last year.

“At a time when ESB is reporting enormous profits, their retail arm is issuing fear‑inducing letters to elderly widowers over a paltry 16 euro,” Mr. McGrath said. He argued that his office frequently encounters similar cases, suggesting that the automated nature of debt collection systems often fails to account for the personal circumstances of elderly or vulnerable account holders.

Electric Ireland’s Response and Review

Electric Ireland has declined to comment on the specifics of individual customer accounts due to privacy and data protection policies. However, in a statement, the company confirmed it is taking action to address the concerns raised by the Tipperary TD.

“We have requested the customer details so we can review the case and engage directly with them,” an Electric Ireland spokesperson said. The review is expected to determine whether the automated letter triggered in this instance was appropriate given the customer’s payment history and personal circumstances.
