Despite widespread efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine hesitancy continues to pose a significant challenge, particularly in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí (SLP). According to a recent survey, 41% of the population in SLP remains unwilling to receive the vaccine, raising concerns about the potential impact on herd immunity and the duration of the pandemic in the region.
The survey, conducted by the Mexican Social Security Institute, revealed that the main reasons for vaccine hesitancy include fears about side effects, concerns about the speed of vaccine development, and mistrust in government institutions. Additionally, some respondents cited their belief in conspiracy theories, while others expressed a preference for waiting for the virus to run its course.
Health officials in SLP have been working to address these concerns and promote vaccination among the populace. Dr. Mónica RangelMéndez, the state’s Health Secretary, emphasized the importance of vaccines in controlling the pandemic and urged reluctant individuals to consult reliable sources of information to dispel myths and misconceptions.
“Vaccines are the key to ending this pandemic and returning to a normal life,” RangelMéndez said. “We understand that people may have concerns, but we want to reassure them that these vaccines have been thoroughly tested and approved for use based on robust scientific evidence.”
To-date, SLP has administered over 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines, with the aim of vaccinating 70% of the state’s population by the end of the year. However, with vaccine hesitancy remaining high, achieving this goal may prove challenging.
Dr. Carlos Álvarez-Domínguez, an epidemiologist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, warned that high levels of vaccine hesitancy could lead to prolonged outbreaks and the emergence of new variants, potentially necessitating additional vaccine doses or even new vaccination campaigns.
“Vaccine hesitancy is a real threat to our efforts to control the pandemic,” Álvarez-Domínguez said. “It is crucial that we address the underlying concerns of those who are hesitant and provide them with accurate, up-to-date information to help them make informed decisions about vaccination.”
Health officials in SLP continue to stress the importance of following public health guidelines, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and regular handwashing, to help curb the spread of the virus while vaccination efforts continue. They also encourage individuals to consult trusted sources of information, such as the WHO or local health authorities, to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccines and address any concerns or questions they may have.
