Auckland Police are seeking public assistance to identify an individual seen near a fatal house fire in Onehunga on May 22. The blaze at a Trafalgar Street property, which claimed the life of 70-year-old Geoffrey Rollinson, occurred at approximately 7.20am. Authorities are currently working to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire, which required a significant emergency response.
Investigation into the Trafalgar Street fatality
Police have released an image of a person they believe may be able to assist with the ongoing investigation into the fire. Auckland City CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves has urged anyone who recognizes the individual to contact police. Information can be provided by calling 105 and quoting reference number 260522/8479, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
Fire conditions and emergency response
The intensity of the fire presented significant challenges for emergency crews. According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand acting assistant commander Kenton Rusbridge, the property contained hoarding, which created a “heavily fuel-loaded” environment. This condition resulted in extreme fire behavior that crews had to navigate during the emergency. At the peak of the incident, 12 fire trucks were deployed to the scene. St John also provided medical support, including three ambulances, an operations manager, and two rapid response vehicles, as several other occupants managed to escape the burning building.

As the investigation continues, the identification of the person pictured remains a priority for the Auckland City CIB.
