Philippines and Japan Deepen Space Ties with New Joint Declaration
The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have formally solidified their ongoing partnership, signing a joint declaration of interest to expand cooperation in space science, technology, and related industrial sectors.

The agreement was signed on May 27 by PhilSA Ad Interim Director General Gay Jane P. Perez and JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa. The signing took place during a four-day state visit to Japan by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
A Decade of Orbital Collaboration
This renewed commitment arrives during a milestone year, marking the 10th anniversary of the launch of Diwata-1, the Philippines’ first microsatellite. The satellite was deployed into orbit from the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station, a moment that serves as a cornerstone of the two nations’ shared history in space exploration.
During a summit meeting on May 28 with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, President Marcos remarked on the significance of the partnership, noting that it symbolizes a mutual commitment to innovation and the industries of the future.
Practical Applications and Future Outlook
The collaboration extends beyond scientific research into critical, real-world applications. JAXA has already played a vital role in Philippine disaster management through the Sentinel Asia program, which provides satellite imagery for rapid assessment. This was recently demonstrated following the May 2 pyroclastic density current event at Mayon Volcano, where Japanese satellite data proved essential in mapping volcanic deposits.
Looking ahead, the partnership is likely to focus on several key areas:
- Enhanced Disaster Management: Continued use of satellite data for environmental monitoring and rapid disaster response.
- Technological Development: Exploration of satellite joint missions and data applications.
- Human Capital: Expansion of space education and research programs for Filipino students, and researchers.
- Advanced Exploration: Potential cooperation in human spaceflight and space sustainability initiatives.
Given the history of cooperation—which includes the joint hosting of the 31st Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum in Cebu last November—this declaration could lead to a more integrated framework for industry partnerships. As both agencies continue to align their goals, future missions will further leverage the technical expertise of JAXA to bolster the Philippines’ growing capabilities in space technology and infrastructure.
