Residents of Pleven Stage Protest Over Chronic Water Shortages

Residents of Pleven, Bulgaria, took to the streets on Wednesday, blocking the road to Sofia and culminating in a citywide car procession to demand action on longstanding water scarcity issues. While water supplies were restored ahead of the Christmas holiday, locals insist on comprehensive solutions to address a problem that they claim has plagued the regional city for over three decades.

Organized by Borislav Tsvetanov, the protest occurred despite the temporary resumption of water services. Tsvetanov criticized local authorities for inaction, stating, "Institutions aren’t doing anything, there’s not even one conducted survey. We’re expecting the water regime to be reintroduced."

The demonstration marks the latest expression of residents’ frustration with the lack of resolution regarding Pleven’s water infrastructure. Despite pleas from community members, no significant improvements have been made to the city’s water supply network, which they assert has not been replaced in over 30 years.

Pleven’s water crisis has not only affected residents but also local businesses, with many establishments forced to close or limit their operations due to the recent shortages. The economic impact, coupled with the persistent hardship faced by locals, has escalated public discontent, prompting this week’s protest.

As of now, no official response from local authorities has been issued regarding the demonstrators’ demands or the long-term prospects for resolving Pleven’s water challenges.
