Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended fuel subsidies for motorcyclists, public transport, and goods transport by one month, continuing efforts to mitigate the impact of rising costs on the public.

Relief Measures Extended

The Prime Minister’s Office stated that Sharif directed authorities to prevent any increases in passenger fares and freight charges. He also emphasized the importance of monitoring these relief measures to ensure they directly benefit those intended.

“The government would continue to extend maximum possible relief to the public, with facilitating the common citizen remaining its top priority,” Sharif said, adding that citizens would not be left unsupported.

Did You Recognize? In February, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran, which then retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil supplies.

The federal government, in collaboration with provincial governments, has already implemented a national relief package worth billions of rupees. The Prime Minister expressed hope for an improvement in the regional situation, which he believes will contribute to stability in petroleum product prices.

Earlier this month, the government initially raised petrol prices by Rs137 per litre, reaching a record Rs458.4. This was followed by a Rs80 per litre reduction in the petroleum levy, bringing the price down to Rs378 per litre.

Subsidies and Financial Assistance

Current relief measures include a subsidy of Rs100 per litre for motorcycle users. Goods transport operators are receiving financial assistance of Rs70,000 for small trucks, Rs80,000 for large trucks, and Rs100,000 for public transport buses. Support has also been extended to small farmers with Rs1,500 per acre in financial assistance, and economy-class fares for Pakistan Railways remain unchanged.

These measures are also being implemented in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Following the federal initiative, Sindh announced a monthly subsidy of Rs2,000 for registered motorcyclists, although Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa launched the Ehsaas Fuel Support Programme, providing Rs2,000 to motorcycle, scooter, and rickshaw owners.

Expert Insight: Extending these subsidies represents a short-term strategy to address immediate economic pressures on vulnerable populations. The effectiveness of this approach will depend on sustained monitoring and the broader geopolitical factors influencing global oil prices.
