Baja California Sur‘s Health Sector Rolls Out Free Neumococcal Vaccination Campaign for Adults 60+ and Children Under One

LA PAZ, BCS — The Baja California Sur health sector is proactively safeguarding the vulnerable by providing free neumococcal vaccines in primary and secondary care units across the state. These vaccines aim to prevent neumococcal pneumonia, particularly in individuals aged 60 and above, and children under the age of one.

Héctor García Hurtado, coordinator of the state vaccination program, urges families to visit the nearest medical unit to receive these vital doses. He emphasizes the vaccine’s safety, effectiveness, and importance in strengthening the immune system against bacterial strains that often lead to this severe respiratory infection.

García Hurtado highlighted that neumococcal pneumonia predominantly affects the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions such as chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, cardiopathy, liver, or kidney diseases, and immunocompromised individuals. Consequently, these vulnerable groups are the primary focus of the vaccination campaign.

The campaign utilizes highly effective conjugate vaccines supplied by the Mexican government. These vaccines are specifically designed to fortify the immune system against multiple neumococcal serotypes, thus enhancing the overall prevention strategy. Alongside vaccination, García Hurtado stresses the importance of personal hygiene, such as regular handwashing and covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, to curb the spread of infectious diseases.

Moreover, the basic vaccination schedule includes neumococcal vaccines for children aged two and four months, with an additional booster dose at 12 months. This strategy helps optimize children’s immune response to potential neumococcal pathogens.
