Valdres Hate Mail Saga Concludes: Case Closed Despite Years of Anonymously Sent Letters

In a blow to the residents of Valdres, the longstanding case of anonymous hate mail has been closed without any convictions. The letters, which have been circulating for over two decades, were believed to be the work of a single individual, according to previous statements from the police.

The latest chapter in this saga began in March 2024 when a woman was charged for allegedly being behind the anonymous letters. However, the case has now been closed due to insufficient evidence linking the suspect to the hateful correspondence.

"I was hit in the face. It’s a huge disappointment," said Tina Granum, one of the recipients of the hate mail. The police have stated that "there is not enough evidence to prove that the suspect is guilty."

A History of Hate Mail

The exact number of anonymous letters sent is unknown, but the police have secured at least 16 of them. Two were sent to the couple Karoline and Tina Granum, who both reported the incidents. However, both cases were closed.

The police reopened the case in 2024 following the TV2 program "Åsted Norge" investigating the matter. A woman was then questioned and charged, with her handwriting compared to that in the letters. However, DNA analysis and a forensic report led the police to conclude that they could not prove with sufficient certainty that the suspect was behind the letters.

Disappointment and Unanswered Questions

Øyvind Dahle, a support lawyer for several of the affected individuals, expressed his disappointment. "This is sad for everyone involved. It’s not what my clients had hoped for," he said, adding that they had hoped to bring the case to trial and find out who was behind the hateful letters.

Dahle is now considering appealing the case with his clients.

The woman who was previously charged has consistently denied any wrongdoing, according to the police. When she was charged, her home was searched, but the police did not reveal what was seized.

The case has left many unanswered questions and a sense of disappointment in the community.
