Portugal has announced that 438 beaches, marinas, and vessels will receive the Blue Flag award this year. Distributed across 100 municipalities, this total represents a decrease of six awards compared to 2025.
The announcement was made by José Archer, president of the European Blue Flag Association, at the Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Pedra do Sal in Estoril, Cascais. Among the total, 396 beaches will fly the flag, consisting of 350 coastal and 46 interior beaches.
Regarding the slight decline in awards, José Archer told the Lusa agency that it was “essentially” due to weather conditions during the swimming season, which typically penalize water quality. He described the situation as “punctual” and not a cause for concern.
A Transition Toward Stricter Standards
This year serves as a transition period before new criteria for obtaining the Blue Flag take effect in 2027. These changes are linked to a new consumer directive that enters into force this September.
Starting in 2027, the process may become more rigorous, as it is expected to include more criteria and a different methodology utilizing external auditors to validate applications.
To ensure new or returning beaches can qualify for the 2027 cycle, an extraordinary application period will be held in July and August. These applications will be analyzed by the International Jury on September 16.
Global Standing and Local Achievements
Portugal remains “very prominent” on the international stage. The country currently ranks fifth globally for awarded coastal beaches and second for interior beaches.

José Archer noted that these results are “frankly gratifying” given the size of the territory and reflect a positive shift in public behavior and dedicated work.
Notably, the municipality of Sertã has applied for the award for the first time this year. 31 “Blue Centers”—structures dedicated to environmental education and information—were recognized across all regions.
Key Dates for the 2026 Season
The first coastal Blue Flag will be raised at Praia de Mira on June 8. This will be followed by the first fluvial flag at the beach in Mourão, Alentejo, on June 13.
The first marina to hoist the flag will be Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island, Azores, on June 15.
To earn the distinction, beaches must meet several criteria, including water quality, spatial planning, safety, services, surveillance, and environmental awareness efforts.
