Title: Tragedy Strikes: Young Police Officer Killed in Klepp Shooting
Article:
In the early hours of December 28, a tragedy unfolded in Klepp, Rogaland, leaving the community and Norway‘s police force reeling. In a statement, Nina Skarpenes, the rector, and Asle Makoto Sandvik, the department head of Police University College’s Stavern campus, expressed their profound grief and condolences to the families and colleagues of the young officer who lost his life.
25-year-old Markus Botnen, who graduated from the Stavern campus just six months ago, was among the victims of the shooting, along with a civilian man in his 40s. Botnen, who was set to begin a new role in another police district in the new year, was remembered for his dedication and passion for his job.
Police confirms that they had responded to a suspected threat situation when the shooting occurred. Botnen and the civilian man were critically injured and, despite immediate lifesaving efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Another officer, who was shot in the leg, remains hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery. In the aftermath, police swooped in on a nearby residential area, believed to be linked to the incident.
Per Anders Røsjorde, the local union leader, described the incident as "extremely tragic," emphasizing the close-knit nature of the police force. He praised the support given to the officers involved, highlighting the importance of being together in such challenging times.
As the investigation continues, the police force, along with the Police University College, vows to support its students and staff, offering counseling and support services. They encourage anyone affected by the tragedy to seek help and to lean on each other during this difficult time.
In memory of Markus Botnen, flags across Norway’s police stations flew at half-mast, a symbol of respect and mourning for the young officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
