Title: PRRS Battle Intensifies: Dutch Pig Farmers Aim for Faster, Nationwide Control

The initial phase of the Dutch PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome) elimination plan is nearing its end, with a growing consensus among pig farmers to ramp up efforts and establish a comprehensive, nationwide approach by 2026. Spearheading this initiative is the Coalitie Vitale Varkenshouderij (CoViVa), which seeks to introduce PRRS status determination for every pig farm in the Netherlands.

Alfred van Lenthe, CoViVa’s program director, shared these plans at a recent press meet, proposing the integration of a monitoring regulation into existing systems like the IKB (Integrale Kwaliteitssysteem Boerderij) or the upcoming Holland Varken, set to become the pig farming sector’s overarching quality control system in early 2025. Additionally, Van Lenthe advocated accelerating the initially proposed 2050 PRRS-free target to 2040, reflecting the sector’s increasing impatience after nearly three decades of battling this virus.

Phase one of the National PRRS plan, launched in 2022 with 49 pioneering farms, is due for evaluation in early 2025. The results will be presented at a special PRRS symposium on March 18. Meanwhile, encouraging preliminary data shows reduced disease impact, lower mortality rates, and a 28% decrease in antibiotic usage among weaned piglets on farms prioritizing animal health improvements.

However, experts like Tijs Tobias, Royal GD’s veterinarian, stress the need for regulatory backing to implement a nationwide PRRS monitoring system. Without specific guidelines, Tobias believes significant progress will remain elusive.

Looking ahead, CoViVa is readying a new action plan for the next four years, scheduled for release in spring 2025. To showcase achievements thus far, the organization has published an informative flyer detailing realized objectives. CoViVa, a collaboration between the pig sector and key industry partners, facilitates projects aimed at enhancing pig farming practices.
