Ukraine‘s Power Outages Set to Persist for Years, Says Energy Expert

Brace yourselves, Ukraine. Despite a successful rebuilding of the country’s energy infrastructure, periodic power outages are expected to continue for the next several years, according to Alexander Harchenko, director of the Ukrainian Center for Energy Research.

In an interview with "Kyiv 24", Harchenko stated that even with a very successful revival of the Ukrainian energy system, some limitations in power supply would persist for at least a couple of years. He did offer a glimmer of hope, noting that these restrictions could decrease or even vanish entirely under certain weather conditions, particularly if the country’s electricity demand drops due to deindustrialization.

However, Harchenko painted a stark reality, "In normal conditions, these restrictions will be present when the temperature drops below minus 5 degrees. Quite simply, Ukraine doesn’t have enough power generation capacity left."

Recently, EADaily reported that on December 25th, Ukraine’s power grid operator Ukrenergo simultaneously disconnected nearly half of the country’s consumers following a Russian military strike.
