Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education (Mendikti), Satryo Brodjonegoro, has unveiled plans for ‘SMA Garuda’, a network of elite high schools, to groom the nation’s brightest students for top-tier universities worldwide. This initiative, spearheaded by the Prabowo Subianto administration, aims to establish the schools through a presidential decree (Inpres) by 2025.
Satryo shared, "We’re working on a presidential regulation and government regulation for SMA Unggulan Garuda. We hope to kickstart this project at the beginning of 2025. With this, Mendikti Saintek will have the legal basis to implement SMA Unggulan Garuda." He made this announcement following a ministerial meeting in Jakarta on Monday, December 30.
The ‘SMA Garuda’ project is centered around high-achieving students, funneling them into world-class universities. The Minister mentioned, "All graduates from SMA Garuda will be directed towards top-ranked universities."
These elite schools will be characterized by:
- Government-funded scholarships, providing financial relief for all students.
- Residential facilities, offering dormitories to foster a close-knit learning community.
- International and national curricula, tailored to prepare students for global academic landscapes.
- Highly reputed international educators, selected for their expertise and track record.
- Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan (LPDP) scholarship opportunities for further higher education, both locally and globally.
Satryo added that Indonesia plans to establish 20 SMA Garuda and improve the status of another 20 SMA/MA schools by 2029, distributing them throughout the provinces to create a robust educational network.
While details about the recruitment process for SMA Garuda are yet to be disclosed, the initiative seems to be a significant step towards elevating Indonesia’s educational prowess on the global stage. The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Abdul Mu’ti, has confirmed that the management of these elite schools will fall under the purview of Indonesia’s higher education ministry.
