Headline: DPP PDIP’s Guntur Romli Blasts Jokowi‘s Attempts to Suppress Corruption Report, Urges Repentance
Article:
In a damning critique of Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Muhammad Guntur Romli, a prominent member of the Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and part of the party’s disciplinary board (DPP), has slammed the president’s efforts to quell a recent corruption report. The report, published by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), named Jokowi among the finalists for the most corrupt leader in 2024.
"Jokowi’s attempt to deploy his ‘buzzer’ team to counteract the OCCRP report has backfired, with the news of his alleged corruption spreading globally," Guntur told RMOL on Monday, January 6, 2025. Instead of trying to suppress the narrative, Guntur advised, the president should focus on introspection and reform.
"Jokowi should use his ‘buzzers’ to apologize and change his current strategy, as it’s counterproductive," Guntur insisted.
Guntur also touched on the controversial censorship of artist Yos Suprapto’s exhibition, which was shut down due to its critical stance on Jokowi. Ironically, the artist gained more recognition and his artworks became highly sought after following the incident. Guntur believes the same phenomenon could apply to the OCCRP report.
"Websites that published the story were taken down under pressure, but the news of Jokowi’s alleged corruption spread even further," Guntur explained.
Guntur further stated that Jokowi’s and his allies’ attempts to censor and intimidate critics are futile, as they only serve to exacerbate the situation.
"Trying to ban and silence critics, and using intimidation tactics, only makes things worse," he concluded bluntly.
