Title: Donald Trump Pays Respects to Jimmy Carter as Lying-in-State Begins in Capitol
In a surprising display of bipartisanship, outgoing President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the U.S. Capitol Rotunda to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter, who is lying in state ahead of his funeral on Thursday.
Trump, who is set to leave office on January 20, joined a stream of citizens queuing to visit Carter’s casket, which is draped with an American flag and rests on Abraham Lincoln’s catafalque. Surrounded by a military honor guard, the scene served as a stark contrast to the divisive politics that have defined Trump’s presidency.
The 39th U.S. president, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was remembered fondly by the public during the visitation. Lyn Leverett, a Georgia native who braved sub-zero temperatures to pay her respects, recalled Carter’s humility and decency. "He was just a nice, humble guy. Just a decent person," she said.
Others shared fond memories of Carter’s 1976 campaign, citing his humility, authenticity, and commitment to public service as qualities that endeared him to them. Susan Prolman, a New Hampshire resident, even recalled Carter staying at her house during his 1976 campaign. "I still have the poster I made for him signed by him," she said.
Carter’s legacy as a compromise builder, a humanitarian, and an advocate for human rights also resonated with visitors. Margaret Fitzpatrick, a Maryland resident, contrasted Carter’s demeanor with that of Trump, stating, "You just have this feeling that he [Carter] cared." Kim James, a fellow Maryland resident, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Carter’s lifelong commitment to service and humility.
Once a divisive figure during his presidency, Carter has been increasingly celebrated for his moral integrity and commitment to public service since leaving the White House. His funeral, attended by multiple living former presidents, including Trump, will highlight this enduring legacy.
After the state funeral at Washington National Cathedral, Carter’s body will be transported back to Georgia, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn, in Plains. As the nation bids farewell to its longest-lived president, the outpouring of affection and respect serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on American politics and society.
