Ukraine‘s President Zelenksy Replaces Ambassador to Germany
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has appointed a new ambassador to Germany, replacing the incumbent, Alexey Makeyev. The news was announced by the German publication BILD, citing diplomatic sources. Makeyev, who held the post since September 2022, will be succeeded by the current Ukrainian ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk.
BILD reports that the official reason for Makeyev’s replacement is routine diplomatic rotation. However, sources suggest that criticism from his predecessor, Andriy Melnyk, may have played a role. Melnyk, who served as ambassador for eight years, had publicly criticized Makeyev’s performance, urging him to be more active in his role.
Makeyev is set to remain in Berlin until February. During his tenure, Germany has provided Ukraine with significant military aid, including 121 combat tanks and 140 armored personnel carriers, along with other weaponry.
Previous Ukrainian Ambassadors to Germany
In July 2022, President Zelenksy dismissed Andriy Melnyk from his position as ambassador to Germany. Melnyk’s tenure, spanning eight years, was longer than the typical four to six-year term for such posts. He was known for his critical stance towards German authorities and his successor, Makeyev.
Melnyk had publicly criticized Makeyev, accusing him of insufficient effort and hindering Germany’s aid to Ukraine. BILD reports that the tension between the two diplomats may have contributed to Makeyev’s eventual replacement.
