Stay Ahead of Respiratory Illnesses: Ministry of Health Emphasizes Annual COVID-19 Vaccination

Amid the presence of respiratory diseases and the persistent threat of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health underscores the importance of preventive measures, particularly the three "Ms": mask use, meters of distance when sick or near infected individuals, and repeated hand washing and disinfection. Minister María Renée Castro reassures the public that the healthcare system is prepared to handle potential virus outbreaks effectively.

The Ministry stresses the significance of preventive actions, such as constant hand washing, use of 70% alcohol, mask or face shield use, and immediate consultation with health facilities upon exhibiting symptoms. Last year, the ministry administered 350,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to prevent contagion.

This year, Castro highlights the availability of vaccines for the entire population, with a focus on fully vaccinating four priority groups: individuals aged 60 and above, those with underlying conditions, pregnant women, and healthcare personnel. She emphasizes the importance of annual vaccination campaigns, with a target of distributing over half a million vaccines within the next ten days.

The Minister clarifies that COVID-19 has become a widespread virus akin to influenza, metaneumovirus, or rinovirus, now presenting as one of many respiratory infections; however, it remains preventable through vaccination. The upcoming winter season prompts the need for increased protection, with both COVID-19 and influenza vaccines readily available and requiring only a single annual dose.

Regarding the recent detection of metaneumovirus and rinovirus, Castro reassures the public that they are common winter respiratory infections, which have been present for over two decades and are not cause for alarm. While their prevalence has recently increased in China, they are a part of typical respiratory infections worldwide.
