Rumanian Politician Georgescu Challenges Presidental Vote Recount, Citing Democratic Rights

Rumania’s controversial presidential election is facing fresh turmoil, with candidate Mircea Georgescu contesting the decision to annul the first-round results. Georgescu, who unexpectedly garnered the most votes, insists that the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) should halt the process following the Constitutional Court‘s recent ruling and proceed with a runoff between him and liberal candidate Elena Laskoni.

Georgescu’s representatives expressed their commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of all Romanian citizens, promising a fair and transparent electoral process, according to Hotnews.ro. Georgescu lambasted the Constitutional Court’s decision to nullify the November vote, alleging that it acted against the law and democratic principles.

In its ruling, the Constitutional Court cited evidence from intelligence services indicating external interference in the elections. Specifically, the Russian Federation was accused of influencing public opinion, with the help of social media, to favor Georgescu and his ideas.

The political firestorm was sparked when the Constitutional Court invalidated the first-round results in early December, plunging the nation into uncertainty. Protests and counter-protests have been recurring across major cities, sparking fears of months of turmoil akin to the 2017addle.
